How to Get a Stripe Account in Pakistan? Tips & Requirements

Stripe does not officially support Pakistan. Sign up with a Pakistani address and bank account. The country verification step rejects you. That is the short answer.

The longer answer: tens of thousands of Pakistani freelancers use Stripe every month. They do it through three legal routes. Each route works by forming a business in a country that Stripe supports. Then connecting that entity to Stripe. This post covers all three. What each costs. How long does it take? By the end, you will know exactly which route fits you.

TL;DR Box

  • Stripe does not accept Pakistani accounts directly. You cannot sign up using a local address and bank. All working methods use a business in a Stripe-supported country. This includes the US, the UK, or access through a supported platform.
  • There are three main routes. The US LLC is the most popular and gives the most control. The UK Limited Company is faster to set up, but it needs more compliance. Stripe Express requires no company, but it only works on specific platforms.
  • The full US LLC to Stripe to Pakistan withdrawal chain takes 4 to 6 weeks and costs roughly $300 to $500 to set up.

Why Stripe Does Not Support Pakistan Directly

Stripe supports 47+ countries, but Pakistan is not on the list. The issue is regulation. Pakistan has strict foreign exchange controls. Local banks do not support Stripe onboarding. This makes country verification fail for Pakistani accounts.

The same reason PayPal withdrew from Pakistan in 2013 has not returned.

Using a foreign entity to access Stripe is legal. You form a real business. You are the beneficial owner. Stripe’s Terms of Service require exactly that. (LINK?)

The Three Routes Pakistani Freelancers Use

You have three working options.

Route 1 – US LLC: Form a Limited Liability Company in the United States. Get an Employer Identification Number from the IRS. Open a US business bank account. Connect it to Stripe. This is the most popular route. It gives you the broadest access. Stripe, PayPal, most payment processors, and credibility with US clients.

Route 2 – UK Limited Company: Register a UK limited company through Companies House. This takes 2 working days and can be done remotely. Get a UK business bank account and connect to Stripe. This is faster to set up than a US LLC. But it comes with ongoing compliance requirements. Even if you earn nothing, you get annual accounts and corporation tax filing.

Route 3 – Stripe Express: Stripe Express accounts are created by platforms, not by you. If you publish on Medium, earn on Upwork, or sell on marketplaces, the platform handles setup. It creates a Stripe Express account for you. No company formation or overseas incorporation is required. You can only receive money through that specific platform, not from clients directly. This is the only limitation.

Route 1: US LLC (Step by Step)

This route gives full access to Stripe and global payments.

Step 1: Choose a state and form the LLC

Wyoming and Delaware are the two most common choices for non-residents.

  • Wyoming: Lower annual fees ($60/year). Stronger privacy protections. Better for most freelancers.
  • Delaware: Preferred if you plan to raise investment. Higher ongoing costs.

You need a registered agent. That is a US-based person or service that receives legal documents on your behalf. Formation services bundle this in. Budget $100 to $300 for formation. Plus $100 to $150 per year for the registered agent.

Step 2: Get an EIN from the IRS

An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is the tax ID Stripe requires. Non-residents apply by faxing or mailing IRS Form SS-4. You do not need a Social Security Number.

Processing time: 4 to 6 weeks by mail, but faster by fax. You can also call the IRS directly at +1-267-941-1099. Monday to Friday, 6 am to 11 pm EST. International applicants can get an EIN by phone.

Step 3: Open a US bank account

With your LLC documents and EIN, you can open a US business bank account without visiting the US.

  • Mercury: Most accessible for Pakistani LLC owners in 2026.
  • Relay: Strong alternative if Mercury rejects your application.
  • Wise Business: Provides a US account number. Good fallback option.

These provide proper bank account verification.

Step 4: Create your Stripe account

Go to stripe.com. Sign up with your LLC’s legal name. Use your registered agent’s US address. Enter your EIN. Connect your US bank account. Stripe will verify your identity using your passport and LLC formation documents.

Use your registered agent’s address across all Stripe documents. Mismatched addresses trigger Stripe’s fraud detection.

Step 5: Withdraw to Pakistan

Stripe pays out to your US bank account. This usually happens within 2 business days after a charge. From there, you move the funds to Pakistan.

  • Transfer to Wise. It converts USD to PKR and sends the money to your Pakistani bank account.
  • Or transfer to Payoneer. Then withdraw the funds to your local bank.

Check the 5 steps below for a quick overview.

Step What You Do Key Details
Step 1 Form your LLC Choose Wyoming (low cost) or Delaware (for investors). Use a registered agent.
Step 2 Get EIN Apply with the Internal Revenue Service. No SSN needed. Takes 4 to 6 weeks.
Step 3 Open US bank account Use Mercury, Relay, or Wise.
Step 4 Create a Stripe account Sign up with LLC details. Use the registered agent address. Upload documents for verification.
Step 5 Withdraw funds Stripe pays your US bank. Then transfer via Wise or Payoneer to Pakistan.

Cost and timeline summary

This is what most freelancers care about before they start. The setup is not instant, but it is predictable. Once done, the system runs smoothly.

  • Setup cost: $200 to $450
  • Ongoing cost: $160 to $250 per year
  • Timeline: 4 to 7 weeks from start to first Stripe payout

Route 2: UK Limited Company

This is the fastest way to start with Stripe. You can register remotely in a few days. The trade-off is ongoing compliance. You must handle yearly filings even with no income.

Area Details
Setup time 2 working days
Setup cost £50 to £150
Registration Via Companies House through a formation agent (LINK)
Address UK registered office required (agent provides this)
Bank account Wise or Airwallex
Stripe setup Use the UK company number and connect the bank account
Annual compliance Accounts, confirmation statement, tax return
Risk Fines and strike-off if deadlines are missed
Best for UK clients, fast setup, structured business
Not ideal for Low admin preference, simple freelance setups

Ongoing Compliance (Read Before Choosing): You must file documents every year. This applies even if you earn nothing.

  • Annual accounts with Companies House
  • Confirmation statement
  • Corporation tax return with HMRC

Missing deadlines leads to fines. Repeated delays can result in the company being struck off.

Route 3: Stripe Express

This is the simplest route. Stripe Express accounts are sub-accounts. Platforms that use Stripe Connect create them. You verify your identity, and the platform does the rest.

  • Platforms that use Stripe Express
    • Medium Partner Programme; Pakistan was added in 2023. Verify this is still active before proceeding.
    • Certain freelance platforms and marketplace tools.
  • How to set up on Medium: Enroll in the Medium Partner Programme. Go to account settings and complete the Stripe Express onboarding. You will need your passport and a Pakistani bank account. Stripe Express can pay to Pakistani banks in some cases through the platform layer.
  • Limitation: Your Express account is tied to that platform. You cannot use it to invoice a client directly. You cannot accept payments on your own website.
    • Best for: Writers and content creators earning on supported platforms. Those who do not want to form a company yet.
    • Not ideal for: Anyone billing clients directly.

Comparing the Three Routes

Which route is right for you?

  • Full control and direct client payments
Choose US LLC if you invoice clients directly. Also, if you have multiple income sources, or want access to PayPal and other processors.
  • Speed with UK clients
Choose UK Ltd if your clients are primarily UK-based. You need to be operational within a week.
  • Platform-based income only
Stripe Express is best if all your income comes via one supported platform. You do not want to form a company yet.
US LLC UK Ltd Stripe Express
Setup time 4 to 7 weeks 1 to 2 weeks 1 to 3 days
Setup cost $200 to $450 £50 to £150 Free
Ongoing cost $160 to $250/year £200 to £400/year None
Direct client billing Yes Yes No
Full Stripe access Yes Yes Platform only
Best for Long-term freelancing UK-focused work Platform income

How to Get Your Money to Pakistan

Stripe does not pay out to Pakistani banks directly. Here is the chain:

  • Via Wise (recommended): Stripe pays your US or UK bank. You transfer to Wise Business. Wise converts USD to PKR and sends it to your Pakistani bank. The fee is roughly 0.4 to 0.7%.
  • Via Payoneer: Transfer from your US bank to Payoneer. Withdraw to your Pakistani bank. The fee is 2% for local bank withdrawals.

Note: Do not use Payoneer as your primary US bank account. It is a transfer layer, not a bank. Mercury or Relay gives you a proper US routing number and account number. That is what Stripe requires for bank account verification.

What Could Go Wrong

  • Stripe account closure: Stripe’s fraud detection flags accounts with mismatch location. Use your registered agent’s address on every Stripe document every time.
  • Bank account rejection: Mercury and Relay have tightened onboarding for some countries. If your application is rejected, use Wise Business as a fallback.
  • EIN delays IRS fax processing is faster than mail. But it is not guaranteed. Budget 6 weeks, not 4.
  • Pakistani tax obligation: Forming a US or UK company does not remove your tax obligation. You still need to declare foreign income in FBR. Talk to a Pakistani tax accountant before your first payout.

Alternatives to Stripe for Pakistani Freelancers

Stripe is very useful, but not required. You can use:

  • Payoneer
  • Wise
  • Skrill
  • Direct bank transfers

These are easier to start but less flexible.

Closing

The process is straightforward once you know the route. Formation takes a few weeks. The ongoing cost is manageable. Stripe then works as it does for any US or UK business. Most Pakistani freelancers say the setup was the last hurdle before a steady income. The routes above still work in 2026. Pick the one that fits your work.
